Science Friday was initially a segment on the radio show Talk of the Nation almost 25 years ago. Since then they’ve expanded to more than just a weekly radio show to include video, photography, articles, and educational resources.
Our task was to take their existing site built on a custom CMS and transfer it to a new WordPress installation. In addition, they wanted to be better suited for mobile viewing and to provide a better user experience overall.
We migrated the past few years’ worth of content and set up content relationships between the media and its authors. We trained the staff in the new CMS and set up workflows for them to continue the manual migration and cleaning up of imported content.
We leveraged a WordPress plugin to create a streaming audio player. This way visitors can select an audio show and continue reading through the site without interruption.
We designed flexible templates so that content authors could rearrange the pages depending on which content they wanted to emphasize. Given that they have a large educator audience, we also added robust sorting, filtering and tagging for their Educational Resources.
